Summary notes of Upgrade meeting on 16/05/2007

• Crab cavity studies for early separation scheme -> F. Zimmermann (pdf file)

• Implications of global crab cavities for collimation system:
  • Oliver suggested that global crab cavities for an LHC upgrade might be ruled out by collimation constraints. Global crab cavities would make the closed orbit for bunch head and bunch tail differ. The bunch is tilted at the IPs and this tilt oscillates around the ring, with a fixed phase which repeats on every turn. It is conceivable to arrange that the head and tail have the same orbit at the primary horizontal collimators. It would be important to know whether the crab angle at the location of the secondary collimators might have an impact on the performance of the collimator system.
• Cost estimate for crab cavities:
  • The cost estimate from the KEKB installation (data courtesy of K. Oide) is about 10M euro(1euro=150 yen) for the production, tests, assembly, installation of the present two crab cavities for 5 years. This does not include power sources, RF controls and R&D before the production. Furthermore, it does not include salary for KEK people, but includes personnel from outside companies. The cost estimate might be difficult to extrapolate to our framework. It is felt that an European based  cost estimate would be certainly an important action to take.
