Summary notes of the LCU meeting on 25/03/2013

Report from meetings

• SLM and general information -> MG (slide)
  Massimo showed a slide with the current LCU mandate and his proposal for a new enlarged mandate. His proposal for the new name of the section is "Hadron Synchrotron Design" section, with initials HSD. As before, the mandate has no direct reference to "single particle" effects. The separation between sections should not be too strict and may for example include weak-strong considerations for optics studies in this section. In the following discussion, it was said that LEP3 studies would not be within the new mandate and rather be part of the new enlarged "CC3" section which will also have to change name and mandate.
  Pascal Hermes will return soon to Münster university to finish his master thesis, and we can expect that he will return later this year to work on a doctoral thesis.
  The slides of the recent 7th machine advisory committee CMAC are on indico. The recommendations will be discussed in a forthcoming LMC meeting.
• MAD-X status -> LD
  Laurent said, that the numdiff manual is available here.
  Helmut said he continues to work on a major upgrade of the makethin functionality. In addition to thick and thin quadrupole slicing, he looks into the automatic translation of  complex bends to a combination of dipedges and simple bends. To be discussed in a forthcoming meeting.
• LBS -> HB
  The main subjects in the last LBS#44 meeting on the 18 March, were an overview of the vacuum related work for the straight sections during LS1 and electron cloud. For more details see indico.
  

First thoughts for  optics measurement and correction review -> RT (slides)

Rogelio proposes a workshop to review and discuss further improvements to optics measurements and corrections.

The length would be 2-3 days, organised at CERN, likely around the 17 June, probably in the framework of EuCard2.
The main focus would be on the LHC after LS1. The subjects would include operational aspects, instrumentation, comparison of needs for measurements and corrections for nominal and ATS optics, incorporation of b2 components in the design and precision studies around the IRs with extra information from roman pots.

Ideas on the future of the on-line model activities -> GR (slides)

Ghislain presented ideas and plans on the future of the online model. The main target is the LHC and what is needed as tools, available online, to get the most out of the LHC. The timeline is to have the tools ready at the end of LS1. The detailed planning should become available this year. He will discuss with CO, and expects to get commitments for professional software support from CO. Massimo commented that the discussions with all relevant parties should be carried out soon and initial work should be launched shortly after summer.

In addition to the information available with MAD-X online, the model should know about driving of magnets with detailed speed and current limits.
Riccardo said it is very hard to get the history of settings in the LHC and the on-line model should also aim at retrieving machine's configuration at any time. Ghislain said, that the model is primarily for the CCC,  but should also allow for read-access from outside the control room.
