Minutes of the LIS Section meeting held on 28^th January 2008

Reminder: deadline for the requests for summer students: 7th February.

Some points form the ABOC/ATC days:

• ABP should be involved in the Project for the Injector Control renovation (INCA). Gianluigi has talked to Simon about that.
• The AT magnet colleagues are interested in contributing to the construction of the PS magnet model. A meeting is going to be organized by Simone and Gianluigi.
• The status of the spares has been reviewed: the PSB and LEIR are not in a very good shape. Christian and Michel C. are going to discuss with T. Zickler.
• Failure scenarios for MTE should be studied.

An Extended LTC meeting will take place from 3 to 7 March 2008 (at CERN) and it will be focussed on the proton commissioning (from HWC to commissioning with beam). There will be no proceedings but the slides will be available on INDICO.

Gianluigi asked whether there were some news about the survey in the PS Complex. Simone replied in the negative.

Gamma transition jump for the PS and PS2 (E. Métral) - slides

Gianluigi asked whether the longitudinal emittance could be further increased for the ToF beam if needed. Elias replied in the positive although this would increase the bunch length.

Gianluigi asked whether the frequency of the instability observed at transition is correlated with the resonant frequency for the broad-band impedance. Elias replied that this has been studied by Giovanni in the past and the correlation depends on the bunch length.

The timing errors in the jump are not taken into account in the simulations as well as filamentation although Elias noted that the bunch is much smaller than the bucket in the PS.

A TMCI type instability is observed at transition in the PS. Studies were conducted to understand the effect of space charge in the instability (slides)

Elias noted that similar simulations could be very interesting also for the SPS. Gianluigi agreed and said that in the past tests were done in the SPS to cross transition with a few bunches. The bunch population that could go through intensity was of 6x10¹⁰ p with a longitudinal emittance of 0.2 eV.s, but no detailed simulation and analysis was conducted concerning this limitation.
