Minutes of the LIS Section meeting held on 10th March 2008

Present: M. Aiba, G. Arduini, C. Carli, M. Chanel, A. Franchi, E. Métral, Y. Papaphilippou, D. Quatraro, G. Rumolo

General Information (G. Arduini)

Open days: volunteers are needed. Everybody is encouraged to contribute to make this event a success

Secretarial support for ABP: we will have 50% Lauriane, 20% auxiliary help (M-P Colin). Gianluigi has suggested to take a CERN staff child to scan old PSB/PS/SPS notes and put them in CDS. Everybody is welcome to suggest notes that should be made available on the web.

New ABOC structure: P. Collier (chairman), K. Hanke (deputy chairman), S. Gilardoni (scientific secretary)

New APC structure: S. Maury (chairman), K. Cornelis (deputy chairman), G. Rumolo (scientific secretary)

The Extended LTC has taken place from 3 to 7 March and it has been dedicated to the preparation for cold-check out and beam commissioning with protons. Present strategy for the LHC commissioning:

The summary of the Extended LTC will take place on Friday 14/3/2008 in the Main Auditorium.

TT10 survey: important misalignments (up to 8 mm) have been found in the central part (over about 100 m) where the soil is moving vertically. Although the soil movement is monitored regularly, the last survey of the magnetic elements dates to more than 10 years ago. Given the speed of the movement it might be important to have a survey of the line (and in particular the central part) every ~5 years.

Important "non-conformities" have been found in the SPS vacuum chambers in sextant 3 after an inspection with an endoscope requested by Gianluigi in order to understand some losses observed since 2 years in the SPS.

PS/OP shut-down courses have started.

Attendance to a new RP course is necessary to keep access to the machines.

Volunteers are required as technical experts in the preparation of the Safety Rules concerning the following topics

Round table

Elias gave a report of the last informal meeting on the SPS impedance studies. (summary).

Gianluigi suggested that Giovanni could train Giulia Papotti in the use of HEADTAIL so that she could help in the simulations for the longitudinal plane. It is important to extend the pool of people with experience in using the HEADTAIL code.

Elias is working with F. Arnold-Malandain (OP) to produce a display of the emittance evolution in the SPS as measured from the ionization profile monitors. Michel Chanel suggested to get in touch with G. Tranquille who as worked on the LEIR Ionization Profile monitor.

Work is ongoing in the definition of the specifications for new Beam Loss Monitors (with LHC technology) for the PS-SPS Complex.

Michel Chanel

Wire Scanners in the PS Booster have been displaced (to separate them from the septa vacuum-wise).

The voluntary misalignments calculated by Giovanni have been introduced in the machine (3 vertical and 6 horizontal movements)

The survey has evidence a "bump" in the vertical plane of 2 mm due to ground movement. A full realignment might be required next year. This would require 3 weeks and should be planned well in advance.

The BPM alignment has been measured too and the offset have been introduced in the SW.

A dipole for the shaving system has been displaced. Gianluigi asked Michel Chanel to inform Olav Berrig of all the changes (WS and shaver dipole)

Yannis Papaphilippou

Implementation of the orbit correctors in the PS model is ongoing

The results of the tests for and LHC cycle wit a slow ramp are being summarized in a note and the issues found are being discussed with CO, OP and RF. A PS supervisor meeting will be dedicated to that.
