IP1-IP5 phasing in LHC optics V6.503 -> MA (pdf)
The aim is primarily to change the phase advance between IP1 and IP5 and make it a multiple of pi/2 (beam-beam effects).
Two solutions are proposed:
Solution 1 - change IR3/4/7: rather simple and successful. No impact on squeeze sequence. Issue with dispersion in IR7. No reduction of current Beam 1/2 phase splitting.
Solution 2- change IR3/4/7 as well as IR2 (Beam 2) and IR8 (Beam 1): Successful and it allows also curing the Beam 1/2 phase splitting in all insertions, except IR4/7. Dispersion in IR7 is even reduced. The price to pay is the need to adapt the squeeze sequence for IR2/8.
Solution 2 is the preferred one. The detailed study of the impact of the new optics on aperture will be reported in a future meeting.
