Minutes of the LIS Section meeting held on 16th June 2008

Present: G. Arduini, S. Aumon, J. Barranco, O. Berrig, C. Carli, M. Chanel, A. Franchi, S. Gilardoni, M. Martini, S. Maury, E. Métral, Y. Papaphilippou, G. Rumolo, B. Salvant

General Information (Gianluigi)

An Estonian delegation came to CERN. They are interested in getting experience in accelerators and they could finance Estonian students. We should collect possible thesis subjects and pass them to Yannis who is in contact with T. Niinikoski (the CERN contact with the Estonian delegation).

TI2 tests have taken place. The measured optics parameters agree very well with the expectations

Training quenches in sector 5-6 have been stopped after the discovery of a weakness in the quench protection logic in case of a simultaneous quench of the 2 apertures of a magnet. An equivalent energy of 6.6 TeV has been reached.

HW Commissioning of Sector 7-8 is progressing and HW commissioning of Sector 8-1 is due to start this week.

The preliminary results of the MDs ongoing in the PS-SPS complex are available here.

Control issues in the PS-SPS Complex:

Simone

Status of the MTE:

The programme for the correction of the working point is not working and the working point had to be adjusted by means of an Excel spreadsheet calculating the required current trims in the PFW corresponding to the demanded tune and chromaticity changes. The Excel spreadsheet uses the matrices measured previously by Simone and Andrea at 14 GeV/c. The control of the tune during the capture process by using the low energy tune trim quadrupoles is performed in a similar way.

The capture of a pencil beam has been performed.  The measurements of tune and chromaticity performed during the setting-up have allowed to evidence a polarity error in one of the MTE octupoles.

The KFA4 is available and the commissioning of the other kickers is ongoing.

Recently it has been discovered that a skew quadrupole is disconnected. This is not expected to be a problem.

The PS orbit measurement system seems to work better but further tests are needed. The orbit measurement seems to indicate that the orbit is deteriorating during the ramp. A realignment might be necessary.

Christian

A test of the LEIR power supplies is being organized (including the RF power supplies)

A proposal for a different injection scheme for the PSB with LINAC4 has been discussed with BT.

Michel Martini is progressing with the simulation work with ORBIT.
